The intense heat of midsummer hadn’t abated by the start of sunset. The bright yellow sun brought an orange haze to bear, and the rocks and sand on the shore were still baking. Crystal turquoise water, ebbing and flowing quietly without the aid of the wind, lapped gently at the shore.
As she walked along the shallows, holding up her skirts to avoid her dress being soaked, the lady glanced up at the horizon. A great clipper ship moved slowly along, as one by one her reefed sails were unfurled. She knew her father would be on the quarterdeck, shouting orders to the sailors. It would be many months before she saw him again, but as always he would bring treasures from far away places to delight her heart.
As she watched, hand over her eyes to shield them from the brightness, the sails captured the wind and the ship’s speed picked up. As it did so, an ocean breeze lifted her hair, and though he couldn’t see her, she waved.
